Degradation of the cyanobacterial hepatotoxin microcystin by a new bacterium isolated from a hypertrophic lake.

چکیده
A bacterium capable of degrading microcystins-RR, -YR, and -LR was isolated from a hypertrophic lake. The bacterium, designated Y2 and classified phenotypically as a member of the genus Sphingomonas, was shown to be distinct phylogenetically from any established species of Sphingomonas on the basis of 16S rDNA sequencing. The bacterium was tentatively identified as Sphingomonas by manual chemotaxonomy, but 16S rRNA sequencing analysis suggests that it is in fact a new species or even a new genus. When the Y2 bacterium was added to microcystins present in culture medium, the microcystins were degraded thoroughly in 4 days. The highest degradation rates of microcystins-RR and -LR were 13 and 5.4 mg L-1 day-1, respectively. The degradation rates were strongly dependent on temperature and the maximum rate was at 30 degrees C.

Degradation of [Dha7]MC-LR by a Microcystin Degrading Bacterium Isolated from Lake Rotoiti, New Zealand
For the first time a microcystin-degrading bacterium (NV-3 isolate) has been isolated and characterized from a NZ lake. Cyanobacterial blooms in New Zealand (NZ) waters contain microcystin (MC) hepatotoxins at concentrations which are a risk to animal and human health. Degradation of MCs by naturally occurring bacteria is an attractive bioremediation option for removing MCs from drinking and re...
متن کاملDegradation of microcystins using immobilized microorganism isolated in an eutrophic lake.
The final purpose of our series of studies is to establish a biological removal method of cyanobacteria and their toxic products using immobilized microorganisms that can lyse cyanobacteria and decompose microcystins. To establish the biological removal method in non-point areas and water purification plants, as the first step, we explored bacteria active against the cyanobacterial hepatotoxin ...
متن کاملBiodegradation of microcystins by aquatic Burkholderia sp. from a South Brazilian coastal lagoon.
Biological degradation of cyanobacterial hepatotoxin microcystins in estuarine and coastal water samples from the Patos Lagoon estuarine system, a coastal lagoon situated at the southernmost region of Brazil, was observed. Samples of natural surface water were spiked with purified and semi-purified microcystins (MC-LR and [D-Leu(1)]MC-LR) and their concentrations were monitored by HPLC analysis...
متن کاملSphingosinicella microcystinivorans gen. nov., sp. nov., a microcystin-degrading bacterium.
Three strains of bacteria that degrade the cyanobacterial hepatotoxin microcystin, Y2T, MDB2 and MDB3, were isolated from a eutrophic lake, Lake Suwa, and the Tenryu River, Japan, and characterized. These strains were aerobic and chemo-organotrophic and their cells were Gram-negative, non-spore-forming rods, motile by means of single polar flagella. Yellow-pigmented colonies were formed on nutr...
متن کاملQuantitative real-time PCR for determination of microcystin synthetase e copy numbers for microcystis and anabaena in lakes.
Cyanobacterial mass occurrences in freshwater lakes are generally formed by Anabaena, Microcystis, and Planktothrix, which may produce cyclic heptapeptide hepatotoxins, microcystins. Thus far, identification of the most potent microcystin producer in a lake has not been possible due to a lack of quantitative methods. The aim of this study was to identify the microcystin-producing genera and to ...
